Description

1886-P VAM-4 Doubled 188 Strong Discovered by George Mallis, June 1965. Revised 2011. Revised October 2024 to incorporate former VAM 4A 4 (revised) III2 4 - C3a (Doubled 188 Strong) (190) Obverse III2 4 - 188 in date doubled. 1 strongly doubled below top crossbar, left 8 at top inside of upper loop and slightly at right outside of lower loop and right 8 on lower left inside of bottom loop. Earlier die states show die rust pitting and splotches on Liberty head primarily at back of face and neck with die file lines on spot below ear. Pitting fades away in later die states. DPIS - LE3/RE4 Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: Doubling more pronounced than III2 3 obverse. Closed 6 variety. Same doubling of 18 like 1886-P VAM-11 (Eliminated - same as 1886-P VAM-4). VAM 4A was listed for rusty splotches on the cheek which fade away gradually over time. It has been eliminated and incorporated into the VAM 4 specification.
