Description

George Powell discovered the 1886 Philadelphia Morgan dollar VAM-3A in October 2005, assigning it the designation Doubled 1 Weak, Clashed Obverse n under classification III2 3 with a C3d reverse. The obverse carries a clashed die impression — a faint partial incuse n from the reverse word IN appears next to Liberty's neck — along with the 1 doubled below its crossbar. The date features a closed 6. An important relationship exists among the 3-series listings: VAM-3 has no clash, VAM-3A has one clash event, and VAM-3B shows two clashes, documenting progressive die contact history within the same die pairing. On the reverse, the C3d die displays very slight rim-ward doubling at the bottom inside of the letters TATES OF AMERICA and on a couple of leaves at the top of the right wreath. Die clashing transfers reverse legend elements onto the obverse in mirror image, and the lowercase n is among the most commonly observed clash transfers on Morgan dollars because of its position relative to Liberty's neck.
