1886-P VAM-11

Description

Originally discovered by Bill Fivaz in February 1973, the 1886-P VAM-11 was classified under designation 11 III2 11 - C3a as a Doubled 188 variety of the Morgan Dollar. The obverse exhibits doubling on the first three digits of the date: the 1 is doubled strongly below the crossbar, the first 8 shows doubling at the upper right inside of the upper loop and at the bottom right outside, and the second 8 is doubled on the lower left inside of the bottom loop. Despite the well-documented doubling characteristics, VAM-11 has been delisted after researchers determined it is the same die pair as 1886-P VAM-4, making both designations redundant. Delisted VAM numbers remain in the reference catalog to prevent confusion when older attributions appear on certified holders or in published literature. The 1886 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar was struck from a mintage of over 19.9 million coins, and collectors encountering a holder labeled VAM-11 should recognize it as equivalent to VAM-4, which carries the active listing for this doubled-date die pair.
