Description

Baseline die marriage for the 1886 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar, VAM-1 is classified III2 1 - C3a (189) with the "Closed 6" date characteristic. On this obverse, the upper knob of the digit 6 touches the lower loop, creating the closed appearance that distinguishes this date punch from open-6 varieties where a gap separates the two elements. Some specimens additionally show a die chip between the loops of the first 8 on the left side, and others display chips in the upper loop of the 6 — progressive die deterioration markers that allow collectors to sequence surviving coins within the die's working life. Philadelphia struck 19,963,886 Morgan Dollars in 1886, a substantial mintage in the series' ninth year that places this date among the more available Philadelphia issues. The reverse carries the standard C3 type designation without additional distinguishing features. As VAM-1, this variety represents the most commonly encountered die marriage for the date and serves as the reference point against which all other 1886-P varieties are compared. The appearance of die chips at multiple locations within the date digits indicates that the obverse die accumulated localized metal fatigue over its production run, with fragments breaking away from areas of concentrated stress around the incused date punch impressions.
