Description
Revised in 2007, the 1886-P VAM-1E1 is classified III2 1 · C3a with DPIS 189 and named Curved Spiked 6, S Die Impression. On the obverse die III2 1, a raised metal spike with a curved outline projects diagonally upward and to the left from the inside of the upper loop of the 6 — possibly the result of a re-punched 6 lower loop pressed in too high. The reverse C3a die carries a thread-like impression in the shape of an "S" on part of the eagle's left wing, a subtle but diagnostic feature. VAM-1E1 is closely related to VAM-1E2 and shares the same obverse die, making side-by-side comparison important for accurate attribution. DPIS 189 places this variety within the die pair inventory sequence for 1886 Philadelphia Mint Morgans. The 1886-P was struck in 90% silver with a large mintage, and business-strike survivors are abundant in circulated grades. The Curved Spiked 6 feature on VAM-1E1 is best examined under magnification, as the curved spike distinguishes it from other spiked-6 varieties in the series.
