Description

Cataloged at DPIS 187, the 1884-S Morgan Dollar VAM-4.1 represents the early die state (EDS) of what was originally cataloged as VAM-4D — the two designations share the same physical die pair. The subname system (.1, .2, etc.) was adopted for VAM-4 after it became apparent that multiple die pairs were being attributed under a single VAM-4 classification; the subnames were assigned to bring precision to the catalog grouping. VAM-4.1 is specifically the Far Date early die state representative within this group. As noted in the Brent F. comment on this variety, the multiple-die-pair situation for 1884-S VAM-4 illustrates the ongoing refinement of VAMWorld attribution as new die pair information is developed. The 1884-S Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at San Francisco, and the relatively modest mintage for this date gives all documented varieties added significance for registry collectors.
