1884-S VAM-11
Error
Description
Logan McKechnie discovered this San Francisco Morgan dollar in November 2004, with the listing revised in 2017. Cataloged as VAM-11 revised under classification III2 3 with a C3f reverse, the variety is titled S/S Filled, Very Far Date and carries a rarity rating of 187. The date is set very far to the right and slightly slanted, with a raised dot on the surface of the lower right of the upright of the 4 near the base serving as the obverse die marker. The reverse carries a type IV S mintmark that appears filled, with the top loop solid and a curved line at the bottom right inside of the lower loop indicating repunching. A diagonal die scratch on the left side of the wreath opposite the U in UNITED marks the reverse die. The date position is indexed as LH4/RE5. The reverse die also served on VAM-20, creating a die-linked pair. San Francisco Morgan dollars from 1884 had a mintage of just 3,200,000, the lowest among the three active mints that year, and the very far date placement combined with the filled S mintmark makes this variety accessible to collectors screening 1884-S dollars for attributable die features. =1884-S VAM-11 S/S Filled, Very Far Date= Discovered by C.
