Description

A fresh September 2024 discovery by Alan Scott, VAM-26 occupies a specialized position in the 1884-S Morgan Dollar census as classification III2 7 C3m — a Far Date variety distinguished by a dot-like feature in the ear and a mintmark positioned slightly left of center. The obverse die is shared with VAM-25, placing VAM-26 in a later die state on the same obverse progression (emission sequence: obverse 25, then 26). On the reverse, the S mintmark sits slightly left, with an upper serif appearing under the center bow knot; there is also slight engraving on two outer leaves above the N of ONE, a delicate diagnostic that demands careful lighting and at least 7x magnification. The most reliable reversal die marker is a cluster of multiple fine lines between the lower left leg and feathers, running along the inner feathered edge of the left leg. Die position code DPIS B34/C5 is on record. The 1884-S is a key-date Morgan in circulated grades; VAM-26 adds a layer of specialist appeal for researchers tracking newly listed varieties from Alan Scott's ongoing die study work.
