Description

Cataloged as PC-1c-1884-01R by Cuds on Coins, this pre-cud variety on the 1884 Indian Head cent documents the earliest stage of die failure on the reverse — a hairline die crack that has not yet progressed to the full metal separation that defines a true cud. James Barton Longacre's Indian Head design, produced from 1859 through 1909, featured a Native American-inspired portrait on the obverse (actually Liberty wearing a feathered headdress) and a wreath reverse that transitioned from a laurel wreath to an oak wreath with shield in 1860. Philadelphia struck approximately 23.26 million Indian Head cents in 1884, a period when the bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) had been standard since 1864. Pre-cuds represent a crucial diagnostic window in die deterioration: the steel die has cracked under the cyclic stress of striking, but the fractured section remains firmly anchored within the die collar, producing a raised hairline on struck coins that traces the fracture path. As the die continues in service, the cracked section progressively loosens and may eventually break away entirely, leaving a featureless raised blob — the full cud — on subsequent coins.
