Description

The 1883-O Morgan Dollar VAM-3, designated O/O Right, was discovered by Leroy Van Allen in December 1965 — an attribution by one of the two eponymous founders of the VAM classification system, the V in VAM standing for Van Allen himself. The O mintmark was first punched, then repunched with the original impression showing to the right of the accepted final position. The 1 in the date is doubled, with slight additional doubling visible on the 3. A gouge is present in the RT of LIBERTY on the obverse, and heavy polishing lines are distributed across the obverse field. The 1883-O Morgan Dollar is a 90% silver coin struck at the New Orleans Mint. Van Allen's December 1965 discovery of VAM-3 falls within the foundational period of systematic Morgan Dollar attribution, and the combination of mintmark repunching, date doubling, die gouging, and field polishing lines makes VAM-3 a variety rich in diagnostic detail for the specialist collector building an 1883-O die variety set.
