Description

While the 1883-O Morgan Dollar is considered a common date in the series, repunched mint mark varieties like this WRPM-003 add meaningful collector interest to coins that might otherwise be valued primarily for their silver content. Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #3 and VAM #16, this third Wexler-cataloged RPM for the 1883 New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar shows the O mint mark punched more than once into the working die, with traces of the initial impression visible alongside the final placement. The triple attribution across CONECA, VAM, and Wexler reflects the depth of research Morgan Dollar varieties have received over decades. Hand-punching mint marks into individual dies was standard practice throughout the 19th century, and New Orleans production under the Bland-Allison Act generated enormous quantities of working dies, each requiring manual mint mark application. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1883-O $1 WRPM-003, this variety demonstrates that even common-date Morgan Dollars reward careful examination — the difference between a generic 1883-O and a confirmed VAM-16 RPM can be significant to die variety specialists.
