1883-O VAM-1H
Error
Description
Discovered in 2010 and subsequently eliminated from the active VAM catalog as identical to 1883-O VAM-36B, this New Orleans Morgan dollar was originally cataloged as VAM-1H under classification III2 1 with a C3a reverse, titled Beveled Fields at Cap Top and Back, carrying a rarity rating of 181. The obverse exhibits beveled fields at the top of the Phrygian cap and back of the cap ribbon, likely resulting from over polishing applied to remove die clash marks. The reverse C3a die shows some heavy die polishing at the eagle's left foot. On certain specimens a bridge-like feature appears above the O mintmark, resembling the characteristic seen on 1883-O VAM-36A, which fueled speculation that VAM-1H is actually a late die state of VAM-36A rather than a distinct die variety. Leroy Van Allen's examination of side-by-side examples was expected to resolve this question. Collectors encountering specimens attributed as VAM-1H should note its eliminated status and cross-reference to VAM-36B for current catalog purposes.
