Description

Formerly designated VAM-17A before reclassification, the 1883-O VAM-19A Morgan Dollar carries the classification 19A III2 9 – C3l (Doubled 1, O Tilted Left, Tilted Field) with die pairing number 181. The obverse (III2 9) displays a die crack running through the top of PLURIBUS and another through the wheat leaves extending up to the bottom of the U and down to the cap field, accompanied by a tilted field below the cap extending to its top — a displaced field break where the die surface has shifted creating a visible step or depression in the field area adjacent to Liberty's cap. The doubled 1 in the date adds a hub doubling component to the obverse diagnostics, providing a third identification checkpoint beyond the die cracks and tilted field. The reverse (C3l) features a type II O mintmark tilted slightly to the left, along with a thin and shallow die scratch at the top of the eagle's right wing. The tilted mintmark reflects the hand-punched nature of New Orleans Mint mintmark application, where the small steel O punch was positioned and struck by hand into each working die, inevitably producing subtle variations in tilt, depth, and placement across the die population. George T. Morgan's design was struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1883 in 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter. The reclassification from VAM-17A to VAM-19A reflects ongoing catalog maintenance within the Van Allen–Madison system, where improved understanding of die marriage relationships sometimes necessitates renumbering to maintain classification consistency. The combination of structural die failure (cracks and tilted field), hub doubling (doubled 1), and mintmark positioning (tilted O) provides collectors with three distinct categories of attribution evidence on a single coin.
