1883-O VAM-1
Error
Description
ELIMINATED VARIETY: This 1883 New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar was originally cataloged as VAM-1 with die pair (181), but was eliminated from the active VAM catalog in 2015 when rotated dies became the basis for reclassification to VAM-52 EDS (Early Die State). The elimination means VAM-1 is no longer a valid attribution — specimens previously identified as VAM-1 should now be attributed as VAM-52 EDS under the revised classification. The original die markers included a die chip between the loops of the first 8 in the date. Cataloged by VAMWorld, this elimination reflects the ongoing refinement of the VAM catalog as researchers determine that certain varieties are better classified under different designations. Collectors who acquired coins attributed as 1883-O VAM-1 prior to 2015 should be aware of the reclassification. New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollars from 1883 are among the more common dates, but the cataloging history of this VAM — from active listing to elimination and reclassification — illustrates how the VAM system evolves as research refines the understanding of die marriages.
