1882-O VAM-32

Description

Martin Field discovered VAM-32 in January 1981, with revisions completed in 2019, classifying it as III2 23 · C3a, entry 181 — Doubled 882. On the obverse (III2 23), the 882 portion of the date shows hub doubling with details recorded in the 2019 revision. The reverse (C3a) carries a critical identification caution: the mintmark is an "evil mimic" of an O/S overmintmark variety. Despite visual characteristics that superficially suggest an O punched over an S, expert consensus holds this is most likely an unrecognized O/O reverse — an O repunched over another O — with minor doubling in a few wreath leaves and reverse lettering. The evil mimic designation is preserved because it accurately describes the attribution hazard: without careful examination, VAM-32 could be mistaken for a genuine O/S variety carrying significantly higher collector value. The 1882-O Morgan Dollar is a 90% silver New Orleans Mint issue. Collectors examining 1882-O coins for O/S attribution should be aware of VAM-32 as a mimic variety and exercise caution before assigning O/S status from visual mintmark evidence alone. =1882-O VAM-32 Doubled 882= Discovered by Martin Field, January 1981.
