1882-O VAM-11

Description

George Mallis discovered this New Orleans Morgan Dollar variety in March 1968. Cataloged as VAM-11, classified III2 8, C3a (Doubled 8, Open 2), the obverse shows the second 8 in the date doubled on the left side of the upper loop, combined with the open 2 date style. The reverse is a normal C3a die. A significant note accompanies this variety: as of 2023, no examples have been registered with the SSDC (Society of Silver Dollar Collectors), an organization that maintains a registry of authenticated VAM specimens. The absence of registered examples could indicate extreme rarity, or it may reflect the fact that the subtle nature of the doubling on a single digit makes this variety easy to overlook during examination. Doubled date digits on Morgan Dollars resulted from the hand-punching process used to add dates to individual working dies, where a second impression of the date logotype could shift slightly from the first. The lack of SSDC registration makes authenticated examples of VAM-11 a compelling find for collectors building date-and-mint VAM sets of New Orleans Morgan Dollars. =1882-O VAM-11 Doubled 8, Open 2= Discovered by George Mallis, March 1968.
