Description

Discovered by Pete Bishal in October 1974, the 1882-O VAM-20 is one of the earliest documented VAM varieties for the New Orleans Mint Morgan dollar and features a doubled 1-8 in the date. Classified as 20 III2 13 · C3a (Doubled 1-8) (181), the obverse die (III2 13) shows the 1 doubled on the top right side of the shaft. The first 8 has a die chip with a polishing mark at the top right inside of the upper loop, at the bottom inside of the lower loop, and a small mark on the left outside of the upper loop. The second 8 is doubled slightly at the top inside of the upper loop. Both loops of the 2 carry die chips at the lower inside. This obverse die is shared with 1882-O VAM-47, linking the two listings through their common die. The variety belongs to a group of several 1882-O VAMs exhibiting extra metal in the date digits, a recurring characteristic for this date and mintmark combination. New Orleans Mint Morgan dollars from the early 1880s are widely collected, and the doubled date feature on VAM-20 makes it an accessible pickup for variety enthusiasts.
