Error
Description
VAM-21 on the 1882-O Morgan Dollar was discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974 and later revised, catalogued as 21 (revised), obverse III2 14, reverse C3a, die pair 176, with the attribution: Doubled 882. The doubling of the three rightmost digits of the date is the central diagnostic: the left 8 shows slight doubling on the right outside of its upper loop, while the right 8 shows slight doubling at the top left outside of its upper loop and slightly at the bottom right of its lower loop. The 2 at the end of the date also shows doubling. The revision to the original attribution reflects updated research refining the description of the spread on each digit. The 1882-O Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the New Orleans Mint, one of four operating Morgan Dollar mint facilities in 1882 alongside Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Carson City.
