Located at the 3 o'clock position on the reverse, this rim cud on the 1881 Indian Head Cent resulted from a catastrophic fracture of the reverse working die at its rim edge. When a section of die steel separates entirely from the die face at the rim, the void fills with metal during the striking process, producing the characteristic raised, featureless blob that collectors identify as a cud. On this particular specimen, the cud occupies the right side of the reverse adjacent to the oak and laurel wreath designed by James B. Longacre, disrupting the wreath detail in that zone while leaving the surrounding design elements — including the denomination ONE CENT and the shield at the top of the wreath — intact. The 1881 Indian Head Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in a composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19 mm. Philadelphia produced 39,211,575 Indian Head Cents in 1881, and across that production volume, multiple working dies would have been consumed, each susceptible to rim fractures as the die steel fatigued through repeated striking cycles.
