1881 Indian Head Cent Die Clash (Obverse and Reverse)

Affecting both sides of this 1881 Indian Head Cent, the die clash produced clearly transferred design elements when the dies struck each other without a planchet between them. Struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc), this coin carries James B. Longacre's iconic design depicting Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress — in production from 1859 through 1909. The reverse clash evidence is particularly legible: the nose and forehead of the Indian portrait transferred through and appear under the C in CENT, while the neck and chin clashed above the O in ONE. These transferred elements represent incuse impressions hammered into the reverse die during the clash event, then appearing as raised features on subsequently struck coins. Die clashes occur when the press cycles without a planchet feeding into position — a mechanical timing error more common with the steam-powered presses and less sophisticated feed mechanisms of this era. The clarity of the transferred portrait elements on this specimen indicates the clash was forceful enough to leave deep impressions in the die steel, ensuring evidence survived across multiple subsequent strikings.
