The CC mintmark is designated as the Large CC size for this year. The defining characteristic of VAM-9A is a faint incuse N in the field, transferred from the reverse die to the obverse through a clash event, making this the clashed-die state of the underlying VAM-9 variety. The obverse die is shared with VAM-7, VAM-7A, VAM-8, and VAM-9, a notable die-sharing relationship that confirms the same working obverse die progressed through multiple die states and was paired with different reverses. VAM-9A represents an earlier clash state than VAM-7, the ordering being important for specialists constructing a die-state progression for this obverse.
