1879-O VAM-18

Description

Jim Baxter discovered this variety in October 1977, cataloging it as VAM-18 for the 1879 New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar under the plate designation 18 III2 12 - C3h (Doubled 8-9, Low O) (176). Three distinct characteristics define this obverse die: the 8 is doubled at the bottom of the lower loop, the 9 is doubled at the left outside of both loops, and the 9 displays an open configuration where the tail does not connect to the upper loop. Doubling on multiple date digits from a single hub misalignment provides collectors with several diagnostic points. On the reverse, die C3h carries a IV O mint mark set low, upright and centered — noticeably below the standard height for 1879-O Morgan Dollars. Hand-applied mint mark punches at New Orleans varied considerably in vertical positioning, and the low-set O distinguishes VAM-18 from dozens of other varieties.
