Description
Discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974, 1879-O VAM-15 is catalogued as 15 III2 10 · C3b — Doubled Date, Large O. The obverse III2 10 shows doubling visible on the lower 9 and all of 187 in the date; the LVA classification places this die in the III2 family. The reverse C3b carries the Large O mintmark, identified by its rounded upper and lower right serif tips. The New Orleans Mint operated from 1838 through 1909, and the 1879-O Morgan dollar in 90% silver was produced in the early years of the series, with date doubling resulting from the hand-punched date process common to all Morgans of the era. VAM-15's Doubled Date spread across four of the five date digits makes it among the more significant obverse varieties in the 1879-O census. Rarity: R-4, estimated 201 to 500 examples known to exist. Hinckley's discovery predates the widespread computerization of census data, and this variety is among the more historically documented in the New Orleans Morgan series.
