Description

Paired with the Reverse of 1878 tail feather configuration, this Philadelphia Morgan dollar carries WDDO-010 on an obverse that is itself cross-referenced as WDDO-001. The reverse doubling displays prominently on USA, IN GOD WE TRUST, the eagle's beak, right wing feathers, the wreath, the left star, and to a lesser degree on ONE DOLLAR and the right star. A die gouge sits just below the wheat kernels above LI in LIBERTY on the obverse. On the reverse, parallel die scratches pass through the O of ONE and extend to the left of O, with additional scratches running between the leaves of the olive branch and the left side of the wreath. The reverse die is also a doubled die cataloged as WDDR-011. Cross-references include CONECA 9-R-III and VAM 18. Submitted by Gary Alender, the pictured example exhibited strong machine doubling on much of the obverse, and the split serifs are considered the most noticeable evidence of the underlying hub doubling. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1878 $1 WDDO-010.
