1870 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Extreme Class IV spread directed southward on the TY of LIBERTY makes WDDO-001 on the 1870 Indian Head Cent one of the most significant doubled die obverses in the entire series, earning Fivaz-Stanton listing as FS-01-1870-101. Snow catalogs the die under seven entries — S1, S2, S13, S22, S28, S33, and S45. CONECA lists it as DDO-001 and RPD-001; Flynn cross-references it as DDO-003 and RPD-003; and the F.IND.ERS system designates it FND-006. What elevates this die further is its pairing with seven different reverse dies, documented by CONECA as DDR-001, DDR-002, DDR-011, DDR-013, DDR-016, DDR-018, and DDR-023, with corresponding Flynn designations DDR-001, DDR-004, DDR-006, DDR-007, DDR-016, DDR-020, and DDR-022. Seven reverse pairings indicate this obverse die saw extended service, producing enough coins across multiple die marriages to generate a substantial surviving population. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety rewards examination of LIBERTY where the Class IV offset hub doubling creates strong secondary impressions on the final two letters.
