PC-5c-1867-18 Pre-Cud

Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, the PC-5c-1867-18 is a pre-cud variety found on the 1867 Shield Nickel — the first year the design appeared without the rays between the stars on the reverse, a modification made after just one year of the original 1866 design. Pre-cuds represent the early stage of die deterioration where a crack has developed from the rim into the design but the broken section has not yet separated — effectively a cud in the making. The rim crack may appear as a thin raised line extending inward from the edge, potentially widening or developing into a full retained cud or separated cud as the die continues to deteriorate. Shield Nickels, designed by James B. Longacre, feature the prominent Union shield on the obverse and a large numeral 5 surrounded by stars on the reverse, both providing detailed design elements where die cracks can be observed. Early Shield Nickel die varieties from the No Rays era are particularly valued because of the series' historical significance as among the first five-cent nickel pieces.
