RCD-2c-1865-09R Retained Cud

Description

Sharing the same RCD-2c-1865-09R catalog number as its Fancy 5 counterpart, this retained cud appears on the Plain 5 variety of the 1865 Two Cent Piece — the same die variety documented on a different parent strike type. The retained cud preserves a rim fracture where the broken section stayed attached to the die, allowing design detail to remain partially visible within the affected area rather than being replaced by the smooth, featureless mass of a full cud. A die crack extends from the rim to the E in STATES on the reverse, following the path indicated in reference images. The Plain 5 date logotype uses a simpler numeral style compared to the ornamental Fancy 5, and both varieties were struck from the same general obverse hub design at the Philadelphia Mint. That this identical die variety is cataloged under both the Fancy 5 and Plain 5 parents reflects the reality that Two Cent Piece reverse dies could be paired with either obverse date style.
