Description
The 1865 Two Cent Piece - Plain 5 is a cent produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Two Cent Pieces 1864-1873 series. The U.S. Mint produced 13.6 million examples, making this the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 33% of total production. The obverse features a shield with a banner inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST ā the first U.S. coin to bear this motto and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing 2 CENTS. Second-year mintage dropped to approximately 13.6 million as Civil War demand eased. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $25 to $217 depending on grade and condition. Struck in bronze, weighing 6.22 grams, 23 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #38247.
