Description
The 1864 Copper-Nickel Indian Head Cent presents the uncommon condition of cuds on both the obverse and reverse at approximately 3 o'clock — a dual-sided cud event that results from a die break severe enough to affect the corresponding areas of both dies simultaneously or in close succession. A cud is a raised, unstruck blob of metal produced when a die break removes a section of the die face, allowing metal to flow into the void during striking. Dual-side cuds are rare because they require die deterioration on both the obverse and reverse at the same relative position, a circumstance that typically occurs only in heavily worn or fatigued die pairs. The 1864 Indian Head Cent occupies a historically significant transitional position: it is the final year of the copper-nickel (88% copper, 12% nickel) composition, which was replaced mid-year 1864 by the bronze (95% copper) alloy used for most subsequent Indian Head Cents. The copper-nickel composition gives these coins their lighter color compared to bronze issues, and the 3 o'clock position of the dual cud makes this an exceptional die-failure specimen from the last year of this composition. In this case, both cuds are located around 3 o'clock, indicating significant die deterioration on both the obverse and reverse dies. The 1864 copper-nickel Indian Head cent represents the final year of the original copper-nickel composition, which was replaced mid-year by the thinner bronze planchet.
