Description

Discovered by Delma K. Romines and submitted by William R. Van Note, this 1858 Flying Eagle Cent doubled die obverse is cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1858 1¢ WDDO-001 and cross-referenced as Snow-3 and CONECA 1-O-II. The variety exhibits strong Class II spread directed towards the center on UNITED STATES, the eagle's eye, and the eagle's beak — a broad distribution across both lettering and design elements. Class II doubling results from a pivoted hub rotation during hubbing, producing spread that converges toward a central pivot point. Die marker documentation notes that circulated specimens were examined and better examples are needed for full evaluation on both obverse and reverse — indicating ongoing research. The Flying Eagle Cent was produced only from 1856 to 1858, making the entire series scarce relative to later small cents. The 1858 Large Letters variety hosting this doubled die is the more common of two hub types.
