Description
The 1850 Proof Liberty Gold Dollar is a proof Gold Dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. With a mintage of 2, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 5 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Gold Rush-era production at Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The tiny 13mm coins were easily lost. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Auction record: $129,250 PR60 01-09-2013 Heritage Auctions.
