Description
The 1850 Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar from the Philadelphia Mint, belonging to the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 series. With a mintage of 481,953, this is a less common issue — the highest mintage among 4 variants, accounting for 94% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Gold Rush-era production at Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The tiny 13mm coins were easily lost. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $466 to $1.1K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7509.
