Description
The 1850 (D) Liberty Gold Dollar, struck at the Dahlonega Mint, is part of the Liberty Head Gold Dollars 1849-1854 collection. With a mintage of 8,382, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 2% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by a wreath and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date. Gold Rush-era production at Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The tiny 13mm coins were easily lost. The Dahlonega Mint in Georgia struck gold coins from 1838 until its closure at the start of the Civil War in 1861. Estimated market value ranges from $2.6K to $43K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 12.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7511.
