Description

First documented cud for the 1847 Braided Hair Coronet Head Large Cent, this variety records a major die break at the rim where a fragment separated from the die, leaving a cavity that filled with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless mass at the edge of the coin. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins without additional cross-references, die markers, or comments, CU-1c-1847-1 represents a straightforward rim cud on one of the classic pre-Civil War large copper cents. The Braided Hair design, created by Christian Gobrecht and introduced in 1839, features Lady Liberty with an elaborately braided hairstyle on the obverse and a wreath enclosing ONE CENT on the reverse. These large copper coins measured approximately 27.5mm in diameter and weighed about 10.89 grams — substantially larger than modern cents — and were struck at the Philadelphia Mint as the sole denomination producer for this type.
