1814 Classic Head Large Cent (Plain 4) S-295 Obverse Pre-Cud

Description

A pre-cud is visible on the obverse of this 1814 Classic Head large cent (Sheldon S-295) of the Plain 4 variety. Pre-cuds occur when die cracks develop along the rim in patterns that would eventually lead to a cud if the die continued in use. In this case, the die crack runs from below the "8" in the date, touches the bottom of Liberty's hair, and runs through the star just below the 9 o'clock star to the rim. The 1814 was the last year of the Classic Head design and one of the last large cents produced before the Mint suspended production in 1815 due to a lack of copper planchet stock.
