Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, the PC-25c-1805-01 records a pre-cud on the 1805 Draped Bust Quarter — one of the earliest American quarter dollar designs and among the scarcest denominations to exhibit documented die break varieties. Robert Scot's Draped Bust Liberty obverse and Heraldic Eagle reverse were produced in limited quantities, with the 1805 quarter struck in a mintage of approximately 121,394 pieces at the Philadelphia Mint. Pre-cuds represent the initial stage of progressive rim die failure, where a crack has developed from the edge into the design area but the fractured section has not yet separated from the surrounding die steel. Die varieties on early federal coinage from the first decade of the 19th century are particularly noteworthy because each die was individually hand-engraved, making every die pair unique in ways that later hub-produced dies were not.
