Description
This 1800 Draped Bust Large Cent is the second documented cud for the 1800/79 Overdate variety, where an 1800 date was punched over a die originally engraved for an earlier year, possibly 1799 or even 1797, creating a triple overdate possibility that makes this one of the most complex early Mint date punch combinations. A cud is a raised, featureless lump of metal on a coin caused by a piece of the die breaking away from the rim, allowing metal to flow into the void during striking. Attributed by Cuds on Coins. The Draped Bust design by Robert Scot was the standard Large Cent type during this period, and the combination of a cud break on an already scarce overdate variety adds significant numismatic interest. Early United States Mint dies were hand-engraved and expensive to produce, so overdating was a practical measure to extend die utility rather than discarding serviceable steel.
