Description

Cataloged as the first reverse rim cud for the 1800/79 Draped Bust Cent overdate, CU-1C-1800-01R documents a reverse die failure on one of early American numismatics' notable overdate varieties. The parent coin is an 1800/79 overdate where the 1800 date was punched over a previously dated 1799 die, a common Mint practice for reusing dies that had not been fully worn out. Robert Scot's Draped Bust design, featuring Liberty with flowing hair and a draped bust on the obverse paired with a wreath reverse, was the standard cent motif from 1796 through 1807. The reverse die fractured at the rim, and the broken fragment separated to create the characteristic raised featureless blob where the wreath design should have appeared. That this die failure occurred on an already-notable overdate variety adds a second layer of collecting interest, combining a production-era date modification with a subsequent die break during the striking process.
