Description
A Gold Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1798 Capped Bust to Right Eagle - 1798/7, 9X4 Stars belongs to the Capped Bust to Right Eagles 1795-1804 series. With a mintage of 900, this is an extremely rare issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 52% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a cloth cap (pileus) and the reverse displays a small, naturalistic eagle perched on a palm branch within a wreath (1795-1797) or a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM (1797-1804). The 1798/97 overdate with small eagle reverse is a famous rarity. The heraldic eagle became standard. The Philadelphia Mint, America's oldest coin-making facility, has struck coins continuously since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $64K to $939K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% copper, weighing 17.5 grams, 33 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8560.
