Description
The 1798 Capped Bust to Right Eagle - 1798/7, 7X6 Stars was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Eagle in the Capped Bust to Right Eagles 1795-1804 series. With a mintage of 842, this is an extremely rare issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a cloth cap (pileus) and the reverse displays a small, naturalistic eagle perched on a palm branch within a wreath (1795-1797) or a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM (1797-1804). The 1798/97 overdate with small eagle reverse is a famous rarity. The heraldic eagle became standard. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $64K to $939K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% copper, weighing 17.5 grams, 33 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8561.
