Description
Part of the Liberty Cap Cents 1793-1796 series, the 1795 Liberty Cap Cent - Jefferson Head, Lettered Edge is a cent from the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of 8, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 4 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing right with a Phrygian cap on a pole behind her head, symbolizing freedom and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT and 1/100 of a dollar. Lettered Edge and Plain Edge varieties exist. Multiple Sheldon die varieties cataloged. One of the more available dates in the series. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $241K depending on grade and condition. Struck in copper, weighing 10.89 grams, 28 mm in diameter, with a lettered: one hundred for a dollar edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1389.
