1792 Washington Getz Pattern Copper Idler Copy Half Dollar

Coin Details
Description
Produced by Philadelphia die sinker Christopher Idler in the 1860s, this copper copy of the 1792 Washington Getz Pattern half dollar (Baker 25C, Musante GW-27, Whitman 10710) uses the same metal as the Getz originals — making copper copies more challenging to distinguish than bronze or white metal versions. The obverse reproduces Getz's Washington bust with WASHINGTON PRESIDENT; the reverse presents the heraldic eagle. Distinguishing Idler copper copies from genuine Getz originals requires careful examination of strike characteristics, die details, and provenance. Idler's copies reflect mid-nineteenth-century fascination with early numismatics when collector demand drove production of reproductions. The original 1792 Getz patterns are among the most important early American pattern coins, struck in the year the Mint was established as proposals for national coinage — with Peter Getz of Lancaster, Pennsylvania producing trial pieces featuring Washington's portrait. Copper Idler copies are rare, and collectors encountering copper Getz-design pieces must carefully evaluate whether they hold an original or an Idler reproduction. Sometimes confused with originals.
