Description

Cataloged as Whitman 8230, this thin planchet variant of the Mott token features an engrailed edge — a decorative scalloped pattern around the coin's circumference — distinguishing it from the plain edge versions in both the thick and thin planchet categories. Issued by William and John Mott, goldsmiths and watchmakers operating at 240 Water Street in New York City, the token bears the date 1789, though actual production likely occurred in the 1790s, with the date commemorating the firm's founding or another significant anniversary. The obverse displays an eagle, while the reverse advertises the Motts' trade with images of a regulator clock and fob watches. At approximately 8 grams, the thin planchet is notably lighter than the thick variant (approximately 12 grams), and the engrailed edge adds a third distinguishing characteristic beyond planchet thickness and weight. Struck in copper with a 28 mm diameter. Cataloged as PCGS #607. Classified as moderately scarce, the thin engrailed edge variety represents one of several die and planchet combinations collected within the Mott token series. The engrailing process required the planchet to be struck within a collar die bearing the concave scallop pattern, adding a production step that plain-edge strikings did not require. Mott tokens are among the most recognized early American store cards and document the practice of private merchants supplementing the inadequate official coinage with their own copper pieces — a practice that simultaneously served as advertising for the issuing firm and as practical small change for the commercial district.
