1789' Token Mott - Cent Weight
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
The most commonly encountered variety of the Mott Token series, this "cent weight" version weighs approximately 10.5 grams — heavier than the thin planchet variant — and was struck in copper at 28 mm in diameter with a plain edge. The Mott Tokens were issued by William and John Mott, silversmiths, jewelers, and clock dealers operating at 240 Water Street in New York City, with the date 1789 appearing on the piece, though numismatic research suggests actual production may have occurred somewhat later, perhaps 1793-94. The obverse features an eagle with spread wings, while the reverse displays a detailed clock face, both motifs reflecting the Motts' trade in timepieces and precious metalwork. Cataloged as Whitman 8210 and PCGS #605, the cent weight Mott Token is described as common for the type, making it the most accessible introduction to this important early American merchant token series. The "cent weight" designation distinguishes this variant from the thinner, lighter planchet version, with the heavier weight suggesting a closer relationship to the contemporary federal cent (which weighed approximately 13.48 grams under the Coinage Act of 1792) and thus a more plausible circulating value. Mott Tokens circulated widely in late 18th-century New York commerce and represent one of the earliest documented American merchant token issues, predating the more extensive merchant token production of the early 19th century. Their survival in relative quantity suggests substantial original production, consistent with a token intended for genuine commercial use rather than limited ceremonial distribution.
