2003 Typical Die Clash TDC-25C-2003-01ME
Error
Description
Identified by the MadDieClashes attribution service as TDC-25C-2003-01ME, this typical die clash variety was discovered on the 2003 Philadelphia Mint Maine State Quarter. The Maine quarter reverse, designed by Donna Weaver, features Pemaquid Point Lighthouse perched on a rocky coastal outcropping with a schooner sailing in the distance — a design rich in open sky and ocean field areas where clash marks from the opposing obverse die could transfer and remain visible. Die clashing happens when a press cycles without a planchet in position, causing the obverse and reverse dies to impact each other directly and exchange incuse impressions of their respective designs. Subsequent coins struck from these clashed dies carry faint transferred design elements from the wrong side embedded in their surfaces. The TDC prefix designates this as a "typical" die clash, meaning the transferred impressions appear in the standard mirror-image orientation expected from a normal clash event without die rotation or misalignment. The ME suffix in the catalog code identifies this as the Maine state design within the 2003 quarter program, which also included Illinois, Alabama, Missouri, and Arkansas. Each state's unique reverse design created distinct clash transfer patterns because the design elements that impress into the opposing die vary depending on the specific relief and field configuration of each reverse. John Flanagan's Washington obverse — standardized across all State Quarter issues — means the obverse clash marks are consistent in type across all five 2003 state designs, but the reverse clash patterns are unique to each state's specific design topography. Maine's lighthouse and coastal scene offers relatively open areas between design elements where Washington portrait clash transfers would be most readily visible. Collectors should examine both sides under angled illumination at 10-15x magnification for faint incuse design traces from the opposing die.
