RCD-1c-1803-01R Retained Cud
Error
Description
Dating to the earliest years of the American republic, this retained cud on the reverse of an 1803 Draped Bust Cent preserves a die rim fracture from a period when every die was individually hand-engraved and represented substantial investment of skilled labor. The 1803 large cent bearing the 100/000 fraction overcut provides the host coin — the fraction designation refers to a known variety where the fraction "1/100" shows evidence of being cut over an erroneous "1/000" in the die, a correction made during the engraving process. The retained cud formed when the rim of the reverse die cracked but the fractured section remained in place rather than separating, producing coins with a raised and distorted rim area that retains partial design detail. Unlike later series where die pairs were consumed rapidly and replaced, early Mint dies from the 1803 era were used extensively due to the difficulty of replacing them, meaning a retained cud could persist through many impressions before the die was retired or broke further. The Philadelphia Mint was the sole coining facility in 1803, and its copper cent production used manually operated screw presses that applied considerable force to the large 29mm planchets. The cross-reference "RCD-1c-1803-01R" as a self-referential designation suggests no independent cross-listing exists in other catalogs. Draped Bust Cents are among the most historically significant coins in American numismatics, and die varieties on these early issues connect directly to the individual craftsmen who created them in the young nation's only mint.
