The foundational denomination of American-era Philippine coinage, the one-centavo was first struck at Philadelphia in 1903 under the Philippine Coinage Act. The obverse features a seated female figure with hammer and anvil beside a volcano symbolizing Philippine industry, while the reverse displays the American eagle, shield, and stars with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at approximately 5 grams and 24 mm, production spanned four facilities: Philadelphia (no mintmark), San Francisco (S), Denver (D), and the Manila Mint (M) after 1920. The transfer to Manila reflected gradual Philippine administrative autonomy under the 1935 Commonwealth. Japanese invasion in January 1942 ended local production, forcing wartime 1944-1945 issues at Philadelphia and San Francisco for General MacArthur's liberation campaign.
