Description

Combining two distinct rim cud positions on a single 1863 Indian Head Cent, this dual-designation variety documents an unusually advanced state of die deterioration where the rim fractured at two separate locations on the same die. Cuds form when a piece of the die breaks away at the rim, leaving a cavity that fills with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless mass at the coin's edge. Finding two independent cuds on one coin indicates that the die had reached an extreme Late Die State where multiple rim sections had failed, yet the die continued in service — a testament to the Philadelphia Mint's reluctance to retire dies prematurely during the Civil War era. The 1863 Indian Head Cent was struck during the height of the American Civil War, a period when coins were hoarded for their metal content and effectively disappeared from circulation, leading to widespread use of fractional currency and private tokens as substitutes. Despite the hoarding crisis, the Philadelphia Mint continued cent production, striking over 49 million 1863 cents in copper-nickel composition — the alloy used for Indian Head Cents from 1860 through 1864 before the switch to bronze.
