Description

Documented at its earliest stage of development — Stage A — this first reverse cud on the 1862 Indian Head Cent captures the initial appearance of a major die rim break before continued production could enlarge and modify the cud's characteristics. Stage A designation indicates that the die rim section had recently separated, and the resulting void in the die was at its smallest extent, producing a cud mass on the struck coin that represents the minimum expression of this particular failure. As production continued with this damaged die, the cavity would typically enlarge as surrounding die material continued to deteriorate, creating larger cuds in subsequent die states designated B, C, and beyond. The 1862 Indian Head Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the second year of the Civil War, when coin hoarding driven by economic uncertainty was creating severe shortages of circulating coinage. The Mint responded by increasing production and eventually by introducing fractional paper currency, but the demand for coins continued to outpace supply. Under these pressured conditions, damaged dies may have been kept in service longer than peacetime quality standards would permit, allowing die failures like this cud to progress through multiple stages. The 1862 date has a mintage of approximately 28 million cents, and the copper-nickel composition used through 1864 was harder on dies than the subsequent bronze alloy. As the sole documented reverse cud for 1862, the Stage A designation adds particular value by capturing the failure at its genesis, providing a baseline against which any later-stage specimens of the same die can be compared.
