When federal coins disappeared from circulation during the Civil War — hoarded by citizens who feared economic collapse — private manufacturers stepped in with copper and brass tokens that filled the vacuum left by vanishing small change. Patriotic tokens, distinguished from their merchant-issued store card counterparts by their political and nationalistic imagery, feature a vivid catalog of wartime symbolism: American flags, spread eagles, cannons, warships, Liberty heads, and pointed slogans such as "The Union Must and Shall Be Preserved," "The Flag of Our Union," and "Army and Navy." Produced primarily between 1861 and 1864 across Northern states, these privately struck pieces circulated freely as one-cent substitutes until Congress passed the Act of June 8, 1864, which prohibited the private issuance of coins or tokens intended for use as money. The Fuld cataloging system, developed by George and Melvin Fuld, identifies over 500 distinct die combinations organized by obverse and reverse die numbers, enabling collectors to pursue the series with the same die-variety methodology applied to federal coinage. Struck predominantly in copper with occasional brass examples, most patriotic tokens weigh between 2.5 and 4.5 grams with diameters of 18-20 mm, closely approximating the size and heft of the Indian Head cent they were meant to replace. The series offers an affordable and historically rich entry point into Civil War-era numismatics, with common types available for modest sums while rare die combinations and off-metal strikes attract advanced specialists.
